Campaign principles
Informed, Choice, Respect
Informed
- Anyone giving birth can be confident that they, and any partner present, will be kept well informed throughout the whole birthing experience.
- Post-birth debriefs, explaining what occurred and why, should be provided to every parent at discharge. These debriefs should be conducted by someone present during the birthing process and capable of answering questions adequately.
Choice
- Every person giving birth should have the opportunity to choose the type of birth they prefer, with these information-based choices being available in a timely manner.
- It’s unacceptable that many individuals are unable to access the medical interventions they desire due to the unavailability of resources, such as space in birthing pools, midwife-led wards, or desired drug interventions.
Respect
- Being treated with respect at every stage of the birthing process is essential for a positive experience.
- Consent should always be sought before any procedure or intervention.
- Parents should be called by their name not “mum”.
