Too many people are denied their right to make informed choices and be treated with dignity during childbirth.
Our mission is to embed the principles of information, choice and respect in maternity services across the UK.
The campaign group “Right to a Good Birth” was formed by a collective of parents who shared a common concern: the need for comprehensive integration of the principles of being informed, given choice and being respected throughout any experience of maternity services across the UK.
The campaign was born out of frustration, as the founding parents continually heard troubling stories from friends, family, and colleagues about their birthing experiences. It’s rare to encounter someone who has had a smooth journey from start to finish, yet it should be the norm.
The “right to a good birth” encompasses various aspects. At its core, it guarantees safe, compassionate, equal, and confidential care, with a strong emphasis on protecting autonomy. Throughout pregnancy, expectant mothers should receive adequate medical attention to ensure the health of both mother and baby. During birth, mothers should receive emotional and physical support throughout the entire process. This support, with a special focus on mental health, should continue in the postpartum period.
After a difficult first birth experience where she felt her choices were limited, this mother approached her second pregnancy determined to make an informed decision about her care.
With the support of an exceptional midwifery team and access to clear information about her options, she chose to have a caesarean birth. Feeling listened to, respected and in control, she describes the experience as healing and empowering – highlighting the importance of ensuring every woman has access to informed choice and personalised maternity care.
